Reach to
Recovery is an American Cancer Society (ACS) program designed to help
both women and men cope with breast cancer. Trained volunteers support
patients through face-to-face visits or by phone before, during and
after breast cancer treatment. Program services and activities vary
depending on the location. A local ACS unit may be listed in the white
pages of the telephone directory under “American Cancer Society.”

| “tlc”, Tender Loving Care, is part of ACS Products, Inc., an affiliate of the American Cancer Society (ACS). It is a “magalog” (magazine/catalog) that combines helpful articles and information with products for women coping with cancer or any cancer treatment that causes hair loss. It allows women to order products for special needs that are sometimes difficult to find in the community. Products include wigs, hairpieces, breast forms, prostheses, bras, hats, turbans, swimwear, and helpful accessories. | ||

| Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) is an educational organization that aims to empower women living with breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life. The LBBC offers an interactive message board and information about upcoming conferences and teleconferences on its Web site. In addition, the organization has a toll-free Survivors' Helpline, a Young Survivors' Network for women diagnosed with breast cancer who are age 45 or younger, and outreach programs for medically underserved communities. The LBBC also offers a quarterly educational newsletter, a book for African American women living with breast cancer, and programs for caregivers and health care professionals to help them better meet the needs of women affected by breast cancer. | ||

| The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is the nation's largest breast cancer advocacy group with hundreds of member organizations and tens of thousands of individual members. NBCC's sister organization, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF), empowers and trains NBCC members to be effective in every aspect of the fight to end breast cancer. It gives women the tools to make their own informed decisions and to work beside legislative, scientific and clinical decision makers. Once trained, these advocates represent NBCC as they influence public policies that impact breast cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. | ||

| Sisters Network, Inc., (SNI) seeks to increase local and national attention to the impact that breast cancer has in the African American community. All chapters are run by breast cancer survivors and receive volunteer assistance from community leaders and associate members. The services provided by Sisters Network include individual/group support, community education, advocacy, and research. The national headquarters refers patients to clinical trials and to private/government agencies that provide services. The organization's national educational outreach program includes the Gift for Life Block Walk, the Pink Ribbon Awareness Initiative, and the annual National African American Breast Cancer Conference. Teleconferences are held to update chapters on the latest information and to share new ideas. An educational brochure designed for under served women is available. In addition, a national African American breast cancer survivors newsletter is distributed to survivors, medical facilities, government agencies, organizations, and churches nationwide. | ||

| Susan G. Komen for the Cure's mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening, and treatment. Komen for the Cure operates a national toll-free breast cancer helpline (1–800–I’M AWARE®) that is answered by trained volunteers and staff. Breast health and breast cancer materials, including pamphlets, brochures, booklets, posters, videos, CD-ROMs, fact sheets, and community outreach materials, are available. Staff can respond to calls in Spanish, and some publications are available in Spanish. | ||

| The Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization provides information and support to anyone who has been touched by breast cancer. Y-ME serves women with breast cancer and their families through their national hotline (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week), open-door groups, early detection workshops, and support programs. The organization offers a program that matches an individual with a peer counselor who has had a similar experience with cancer. Y-ME also provides wigs and prostheses free-of-charge to women with limited resources. Numerous local chapter offices are located throughout the United States. The national toll-free hotline also has a dedicated Spanish line. A section of the Y-ME Web site and publications are available in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Russian, and Vietnamese. | ||
