Will power is the capacity to do what we know we must do, but we don’t feel like doing. When you use your will to achieve anything in life, you are exercising your will power. But, if it is a pleasurable experience, then you do not need that much power; you need will power to do things that you don’t feel like doing.
As we talk about the will, we are going to use this term from a practical view point. We are not looking at it from a philosophical view point, instead, we are going to approach this concept as a means to achieve fulfillment in our lives.
There is a keen difference between will and desire. You might wish to have a cup of coffee right now; but that is only a wish; that is not your will. A wish is an internal impulse to action that can have its root internally or externally through conditioning. You might wish to have a cup of coffee, but you only exercise your will at the very moment that you are drinking that cup of coffee. Therefore; will is a wish in action. It is probably a simple definition, but it is filled with meaning.
Since our objective is to approach the concept of will as a practical means to help us find fulfillment; let’s see what the role of the will is in our lives. But before we do that, it is necessary to understand who we really are.
It is not the intention of this article to get into philosophical speculation about human nature; but it is my hope that, by now, you would understand that you are not just only a combination of molecule, amino acid and so on. So, we definitely transcend matter. We are non-physical entities covered with a personality that distinguishes us from one another, but non-physical nonetheless.
So, our present personality has everything to do with the psychological profile that is encoded in our being. Our behavior and our interpretations of our reality right now, correspond to the validity of what we have accepted as real. Therefore, the will is the gate keeper that allows or rejects the entrance of any thought
that shows up to our conscience’s door. The will puts into action our desire to create our reality by focusing our thoughts on what we want to materialize; whether it is negative for us, or positive for us, it doesn’t matter.
Contrary to popular belief, the will is an attribute of the conscious mind; so, we are full responsible for using it. The same way that we choose to think about something, if we want, the same way we can direct our will to do whatever business we need to take care of.
We have the internal power to create a better world for all of us, but for that, we have to use will power to manifest goodness in our world. The use of the will is the key we have to make significant changes in our world.
What separates us from inferior animals is our capacity to feel love, compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, understanding and so on, at will. Therefore, not to exhibits these human traits in our live, is to be less than we can be.
So, anytime that opportunity arises, we should use will power to manifest our true nature. When somebody does or says something negative about us, the instinct is to fight back and prove how wrong the other person is. However, the right use of the will, in this case, is to manifest our true nature: understanding, forgiveness, loves…. I know what you may be thinking, but think about this: Isn’t our conscious choice what differentiates us from the robotic reactive behavior that inferior animal exhibit? One of the main purpose of the will is to manifest what separates from us from the inferior animals.
Our body is so well designed, that it only takes twenty one days to create a habit. But we must use will power to achieve it. That is the best part, because it puts us in control of our lives. The right use of the will empowers us to achieve whatever our mind can conceive.
Once you know that you must do something to improve the quality of your life, because your reasoning says so, then use your will power to make the appropriate changes and the universe will cooperate with you creating a habit, to make your life easier. Only action produces results and the will is a desire in action.
